Protecting the environment: carbon sequestration, regenerative farming, and a more sustainable food supply chain

Agriculture, transportation, warehousing, processing, and distribution all have environmental impacts. That is why we continue to explore ways to reduce our environmental footprint while supporting initiatives that protect ecosystems and promote more sustainable agriculture.

Two Tools for a More Sustainable Food System

1. Carbon Sequestration

Carbon sequestration captures and stores carbon dioxide in the ground, in living systems, and organic matter, helping keep it out of the atmosphere.

2. Regenerative Farming

Regenerative farming focuses on improving the health and resilience of agricultural ecosystems through practices that can support soil health, biodiversity, water management, and carbon storage.

Natural ecosystems are some of the most effective carbon storage systems on Earth. Forests, wetlands, grasslands, agricultural soils, and peatlands can absorb and store carbon through natural biological processes.

Trees, for example, absorb carbon dioxide during photosynthesis and store carbon in their trunks, branches, roots, and surrounding soil. Agricultural soils can also store carbon through the accumulation of organic matter.

Protecting these ecosystems is therefore an important part of addressing climate change.

Regenerative Farming and Carbon Sequestration

One reason regenerative agriculture has attracted increasing attention is its potential relationship with soil carbon sequestration.

Plants remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere through photosynthesis. Some of that carbon is transferred into the soil through roots and organic matter.

Rather than focusing solely on crop yields, regenerative farming considers the long-term health of soil, plants, water, biodiversity, and surrounding ecosystems.

Rotational grazing: Moving farm animals through different pastures in planned cycles mimics wild herds. This controlled grazing stimulates grass roots to grow deeper and pump more carbon down into the earth.

The natural waste from the farm animals combined with compost directly feeds the soil food web, which speeds up the creation of rich, dark humus that stores heavy amounts of carbon.

Crop Diversity and Rotation: Planting a diversity of crops while rotating the crops each season naturally restores soil nutrients, starves out soil-borne pests, stops disease cycles, and cuts down the need for costly chemical fertilizers.

At Green Boy, sustainability is incorporated into our broader business strategy through our commitment to plant-based food solutions and our Plant-Based Food Reformation™ initiative.

We recognize that sustainability does not end when an ingredient leaves our facility. The environmental impact of food products can extend across agricultural production, processing, transportation, distribution, and ultimately the finished product.

Providing ingredients such as grains, starches, fibers, seeds, flours, and plant proteins that generally have a lower carbon impact than meat production is at the core of our business, but our commitment goes beyond the products we provide.

For example, selecting warehouses strategically based on proximity to customers can help reduce transportation distances and associated emissions. Improving operational efficiency can also reduce resource consumption while supporting more sustainable business practices.

Measuring Progress Through Our Impact Report

Transparency is an important part of sustainability.

In our 2025 Impact Report, Green Boy reported a 15.4% reduction in total emissions per dollar of revenue compared with 2024, reflecting a significant improvement in our carbon intensity.

At the same time, our growing business means that absolute emissions in certain areas can increase. For example, emissions associated with our warehouses increased as our business expanded.

Rather than looking at a single environmental metric, we believe it is important to evaluate the broader picture and continue identifying opportunities to improve efficiency as the company grows.

Green Boy has supported environmental initiatives such as Katingan Peatland Restoration, Klim, and Exomad Green.

Sustainability is not a destination. It is an ongoing process of measuring, learning, improving, and taking action.
